Following the tradition of the series, the fourth TRISTAN conference will be held on São
Miguel, a beautiful island in the Azores Archipelago, Portugal.
The Azores are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, 760 nautical miles from Lisbon
and 2,111 miles from New York. Three groups of islands of volcanic origin covering, all
together, an area of 2,335 Km2, offer a world of attractive contrasts.
The Azores Archipelago enjoys a privileged climate that is temperate and maritime and
tempered by the gentle influence of Gulf Stream. There is little temperature variation
with an average of 23ºC (73ºF), in Summer.
São Miguel, also known as the Green Island owing to the abundance of pasture and forest
covered peaks, is the largest and most populated island in the Archipelago. The tempered
climate of São Miguel contributes to the botanical exuberance and the beauty of the
hydrangea, azalea and ginger lilly covered, as well as tea and pineapple (grown in
